I have a few machines in my local network. A Mac running OS X 10.6.7, a PC running Windows 7 Pro, and a PC running Server 2008 R2. My Win 7 box can ping my server. It can't ping the Mac. For the mac make sure stealth is not enabled: System Preferences -> Security -> Firewall (tab) -> Advanced (button) For windows it is likely an issue with the firewall also. This guide might help.
