How to remove Word heading style without losing the formatting?

Problem

I have received a word file where lots of text has the style but was later formatted to not look like the style. Whenever I do a refresh of the TOC it will insert the complete chapter in the TOC. Is there a way to remove just the meta data and keep the formatting?
