In BIOS, what does "SATA Controller" with the ability to select either IDE or RAID mean?

Problem

In my BIOS, I've got a setting called "SATA Controller" that can select either IDE or RAID. It's currently set to IDE. What does this setting mean, and will bad things happen if I change it? My motherboard is an Asus P5VD2-MX if that helps.
