How do I fix a "cannot open display" error when opening an X program after ssh'ing with X11 forwarding enabled?

After launching the X11 app (XQuartz 2.3.6, xorg-server 1.4.2-apple56) on my Mac (OS X 10.6.8), opening an terminal in X11 and running , I then to my Ubuntu 10.04 VM (running on VMware Fusion). When I run (for example), I get: returns nothing. But if I into my Ubuntu 11.04 machine, works. returns "localhost:10.0". I tried while sshed into my VM and then running , but I get: What could be different in the configuration of the two difference Ubuntu machines that would explain why one works and the other doesn't? Update: As suggested by Zoredache in the comment below, I ran , but I continue to have the same problem.

Unix zip directory but excluded specific subdirectories (and everything within them)

I'm trying to zip a directory (on Unix via SSH) but I need to exclude a couple of subdirectories (and all files and directories within them). So far I have this: That doesn't seem to work though. I also tried However that will still include subdirectories within ignoreDir1 and ignoreDir2. The subdirectory structure in the directories that I want to exclude is quite substantial so I can't simply add each directory to the -x argument. Does anyone know how to do this?

How to join/merge many mp3 files?

Searching Google on how to join/merge many mp3 files, it suggests that I should just them together. That might "work", but clearly it is not the correct way to do it, as each header and set of IDv3 tags will also be concatenated. Does a Linux program exist that can be scripted to join/merge many mp3? Can mplayer/mencoder/ffmpeg do it?

Disable "Do you want to change the color scheme to improve performance?" warning

Sometimes this dialog box will pop up (see screenshot below). Every time it appears I select "Keep the current color scheme, and don't show this message again". Windows then reminds me again -- either the next day or after reboot, or sometimes another 5 minutes later. Do you want to change the color scheme to improve performance? Windows has detected your computer's performance is slow. This could be because there are not enough resources to run the Windows Aero color scheme. To improve performance, try changing the color scheme to Windows 7 Basic. Any change you make will be in effect until the next time you log on to Windows Change the color scheme to Windows 7 Basic Keep the current color scheme, but ask me again if my computer continues to perform slowly Keep the current color scheme, and don't show this message again Is there some reason why Windows is ignoring/forgetting my attempts to suppress the dialog? I'd love to never ever see it again, it's annoying, and it alt-tabs me ou…

I'd essentially like to access my host computer from the guest in VirtualBox. Is there an IP address given for my host which I can use from the guest? Are there extra steps required to set this up? I'd like to access my host's Apache, FTP, and SSH services.

What is the "You have new mail" message in Linux/UNIX?

Sometimes, when I log into a box and 'su' to root, I get a cute little message saying I have mail (thank GOD it's not AOL). Where is this mail? What does it contain? Who/What sent it? How important is it? Is this even actual "mail" in the same sense as email? Or is it just my system telling me something? EDIT: In relation to this question, would I be able to send myself mail using the sendmail program like so: ?

How to delete a single cached username from Chrome?

Somewhere along the line I accidentally typed my password into the username field on a website in Chrome. Now every time I go back to that site my password is shown as an option to fill as my username. I didn't specifically save the username/password combo, it is just the little drop down that appears when you start to type. Is it possible to clear this single item? I would rather not have to clear all form data.

Windows Activation FAQ: How do language, version, 64-bit or 32-bit, and source affect ability to install and transfer Windows licenses?

We get a lot of questions on Super User about Windows activation and licensing. This question is an attempt to answer the most common questions in one place with a canonical answer. When reinstalling Windows, the following questions often come up: Can I transfer the copy of Windows from my old computer to a new one? Does the license key on the sticker on my computer work on any computer? If I have a 32-bit version, can I install a 64-bit version? I have an OEM version of Windows, but only a retail disk. Can I still use it? I want to install Windows with a different language. Do I need a new license in that language? I changed some hardware. Will I be able to reactivate my computer? Can I back up my activation before doing a reinstall? How many computers can I install my license on? Do I have to deactivate my old installation before transferring a license? If so, how? How does licensing work in Windows ? What are the restrictions on transferring, reinstalling, and changing versions of …

Why are we still using CPUs instead of GPUs?

It seems to me that these days lots of calculations are done on the GPU. Obviously graphics are done there, but using CUDA and the like, AI, hashing algorithms (think bitcoins) and others are also done on the GPU. Why can't we just get rid of the CPU and use the GPU on its own? What makes the GPU so much faster than the CPU?
