In macOS, how often is /tmp deleted?

How often is /tmp deleted? I thought it was cleaned out boot time and every three days if you don't reboot, but I can't find any authoritative source for this. I'm running the latest 10.6. (I suppose I would be interested in changes in this behavior in previous OS versions.)

What is the Windows hotkey to minimise a single, currently active window?

On Windows Vista, I'm familiar with Win + D to show the desktop but sometimes I just want to minimise two or three windows as they become active and not the whole lot. What hotkey can I use to minimise only the currently active window?

What is the "wheel" user in macOS/OS X?

I recently reinstalled iTunes and I noticed something peculiar. The original version of iTunes has a user in the permissions known as that is set to "Read Only". I dragged this version of iTunes to the trash and installed a new copy, and when I look at the properties for iTunes it no longer says , but rather just . Here is a screenshot with the new version (left) and the old version (right): What is the user? How is it set (I can't seem to set it in the GUI)? Why would the permissions be different now? It's not a problem, I'm just terribly curious.

Is it ok to share private key file between multiple computers/services?

So we all know how to use public key/private keys using SSH, etc. But what's the best way to use/reuse them? Should I keep them in a safe place forever? I mean, I needed a pair of keys for accessing GitHub. I created a pair from scratch and used that for some time to access GitHub. Then I formatted my HDD and lost that pair. Big deal, I created a new pair and configured GitHub to use my new pair. Or is it something that I don't want to lose? I also needed a pair of public key/private keys to access our company systems. Our admin asked me for my public key and I generated a new pair and gave it to him. Is it generally better to create a new pair for access to different systems or is it better to have one pair and reuse it to access different systems? Similarly, is it better to create two different pairs and use one to access our companies systems from home and the other one to access the systems from work, or is it better to just have one pair and use it from both places?

How to pipe command output to other commands?

Example: prints nothing ( a blank line, actually ). I'd expect it to print a list of files. , on the other hand, works as expected ( prints files with 'foo' in their name ). What I do in these situations is something like: but this is rather cumbersome. Why does piping work with some commands, but not with others ? How can I circumvent this issue ?

Is there any program or way to make Mac OS X's ⌘-Tab behave like Windows' Alt-Tab?

Is there any program or way to make Mac OS X's ⌘Tab(Command-Tab) behave like Windows' AltTab? That is, instead of switching between applications, to switch between windows of all applications? I do know there's a way to switch between windows of the same application using ⌘`, but that's not what I want either. I'm not just trying to make Mac OS X behave like my recent former OS, I've been a Mac user for over two years and before that Ubuntu. After using Expose and ⌘Tab I think Windows' or Ubuntu's AltTab is better.

Check if any of the parameters to a bash script match a string

I'm trying to write a script where I want to check if any of the parameters passed to a bash script match a string. The way I have it setup right now is but there might be a large number of parameters, so I was wondering if there is a better way to do this? Thanks EDIT: I tried this chunk of code out, and called the script with the option, -disableVenusBld, but it still prints out "Starting build". Am I doing something wrong? Thanks in advance!

Vertical line for the the right margin in Notepad++

Does anyone know if Notepad++ can display a vertical line on the right margin to indicated that the text will or will not fit on a printed page? I have looked but I cannot find it. Word wrap does work, but it wraps by my screen width, not by the width of a printed page.

Is there a way to move the current window to another desktop without using a mouse in OS X?

In OS X as I'm aware to move the current window to the next desktop, I'd click down on the title bar of the window to have it in move mode, and then while keeping the mouse button down, press Ctrl+← or Ctrl+→. If you don't have a laptop, this may require three hands. Alternatively you can go into spaces and drag a window from one desktop to another. Is there an easier way to do this, with the keyboard only (and two hands max)?

What is the "Search Domains" field for in the tcp/ip DNS settings control panel/preference pane for?

On Mac OS X, if you go to System Preferences -> Network -> Advanced -> DNS on the left is an area where DHCP DNS resolvers show up, or you can enter in your own to override any that your router is dishing out. On the right is a large field for "Search Domains:". I am sure there is an analogous field on Windows and Linux as well. I have looked at google, and also the help pages, which do not say much... Domains are searched in the order you list them, and the search stops when a valid name is found. To search a name hierarchy, use search domains of varying scope. For example: building.campus.university.edu, campus.university.edu, university.edu. Can someone explain to me, or point me to a link that explains what this field is for, and what benefits there may be by me learning different value to enter into it. I am also curious if anyone has seen any noticeable gains by altering the value for the default MTU from 1500 on Mac OS X when communicating over wireless-N. Thanks
