Way to avoid ssh connection timeout & freezing of GNOME Terminal
When I connect via ssh to certain servers, it timeouts and "freezes" the terminal (doesn't accept input, doesn't disconnect, can't Ctrl-C to kill the ssh process or anything). This is in Ubuntu's though it seems to be pausing the terminal input/output, and doesn't affect the operation of the GNOME Terminal software itself. So less a bug with than an annoying inconsistency with ssh. So, is there a way to prevent/regain the terminal from ssh connections that have timed out?
How to reinstall a package using 'apt-get'?
It seems that my is somehow broken: So I would like to reinstall by using . Unfortunately it seems doesn't have a reinstall option. How could I get to work again? It's possible that I found the root cause for aptitude's segfault. Here is how I can reproduce it: 'ssh' remote login into the Debian machine via Cygwin's rxvt terminal (from a Windows 7 64-bit German edition). Enlarge the rxvt window so that it spans across two monitors (yes, I have two monitors) Run . Note: when I resize the rxvt terminal to normal then I don't have these segmentation faults!

Quick way to tell if an installed application is 64-bit or 32-bit
I've got a third-party application (in this case Cognos Data Manager) installed on 64-bit Windows Server 2003. Is there a quick way to determine if an application has been built/compiled as a 64-bit application or as a 32-bit application? By default a program wanted to be installed in Program Files (x86). I'm guessing that means that it is a 32-bit version. I had to get it to talk to an Oracle database and to get that working I eventually reinstalled it in a directory path which didn't have brackets "(" and ")" in it, as that was causing a problem. I've also installed both 64-bit and 32-bit Oracle clients. For future reference, I'd like to be able to type a command "xxxx fred.exe" and have it tell me whether fred.exe would be needing 32-bit or 64-bit setup (eg ODBC data sources etc).

Why is there a percent sign '%' in the IPv6 address?
I am using the .NET Framework classes to get the IP addresses for my machine: I have a VirtualBox adapter which has both an IPv4 and IPv6 address. Using the .NET code, I am getting the IPv6 address as . Notice the at the end? However, if I query the same using , I get the address as , without the . Does the have any special significance? Edit: I just made some more observations about this and they match pretty well with what Stephen Jennings said in his answer. I installed VMware to see what IPv6 address it issued. The addresses were: Clearly, the numbers after % are not some hex representation. I checked all the properties available for a network adapter using WMI and found that the numbers are exactly the same as the property of each network adapter. As per MSDN, it uniquely identifies each network adapter and this property was introduced in Vista. What still confused me was why would the class allow you to create an IP address in that format unless it was valid. The answer was prov…

How can I check the integrity of a video file (avi, mpeg, mp4...)?
This title could be somewhat misleading, so let me explain ... I'm downloading a video file ... mpeg, avi - being one of the popular formats. Now, if I am downloading it, and the download breaks in the middle of the uhm ... download, then, for example, Windows Media Player will give out some error and refuse to play it (although the file is, let's say, 98% complete). But, players like KMPlayer, or MediaPlayer Classic will play it up until that point (as the matter of fact, they can play it while it is being downloaded as well). So, I'm interested, ... without using any means of download (download managers and alike) to secure the file is completely downloaded, how can one verify whether the video file is downloaded whole, and that it is complete ?

How to pin either a Shortcut or a Batch file to the new Windows 7, 8 and 10 Taskbar and start menu?
We are having trouble adding our batch scripts to the Windows 7, 8 or 10 taskbar or start menu. Our batchfiles take some arguments and just execute other application based on those arguments . To keep it simple, we created some shortcuts for our customers which they just need to click in order to get everything running. The question here is: How can we pin those shortcuts or batch files to the taskbar or start menu? (The customers aren't supposed to access the file system and that's why they can only see the taskbar)
