What Tiling Window Manager for Windows do you recommend?

What is the best tiling window manager for Windows? I'm looking for something like . It would be nice if it removes the title bar and has "comfortable" shortcut keys (for me that's keys, but feel free to use your own reference). Open source would be a plus.

Why the heck does NTFS allow invisible executables?

You can hide any file inside of another file just by typing: and to run the file hidden file just use: But the crazy part about this is it doesn't increase the size of the file (so it's totally hidden). And if you delete the file with the hidden stuff inside, the hidden stuff doesn't get deleted. Just use: Why does NTFS allow this? It seems like the best way to hide a virus.

Linux utility for finding the largest files/directories

I'm looking for a program to show me which files/directories occupy the most space, something like: I know that it's possible in KDE3, but I'd rather not do that - KDE4 or command line are preferred.

How can I make the Windows VPN route selective traffic (by destination network)?

I want to use a Windows VPN but only for a particular network, so that it doesn't take over my entire network connection. e.g., Instead of the VPN becoming the default route, make it only the route for 192.168.123.0/24 (I can see that there is a solution for this for Ubuntu in this question, but sometimes I have to do this on Windows too) Can this be automated so that whenever I connect to the VPN it does this?

Change the default sorting order in Thunderbird

Thunderbird (2.something here as 3 is still not stable and had some nasty bugs last I tried) sorts mails by date by default. This is fine, however, it sorts them so that the newest ones are at the bottom of the list, which ... is not fine. Since Thunderbird saves its sort settings on a per-folder basis (and I have many folders) I regularly run into folders I've rarely or never been in which still have the old sorting order. Is there any way to globally change the default sorting order to "Threads, newest messages at the top" (or anything else, which, I assume might be possible as well then)?

Why does the /winsxs folder grow so large, and can it be made smaller?

A Vista virtual machine I use only has a 10 GB virtual hard disk -- and I'm worried about it running out of space over time. I used TreeSize to check for the culprits.. And the primary culprit is that or "Windows Side-By-Side" folder. What is the Windows Side By Side folder? Well, that's explained pretty well here. All of the components in the operating system are found in the WinSxS folder – in fact we call this location the component store. Each component has a unique name that includes the version, language, and processor architecture that it was built for. The WinSxS folder is the only location that the component is found on the system, all other instances of the files that you see on the system are “projected” by hard linking from the component store. Let me repeat that last point – there is only one instance (or full data copy) of each version of each file in the OS, and that instance is located in the WinSxS folder. So looked at from that perspective, the WinSxS folder is reall…

How can I visualize the file system usage on Windows?

How can I visualize which folders and files are taking up all of the space on my hard drive? I'm getting some conflicting reports on the size of hard drive contents. Namely what is and isn't there and what folders are actually using the space. I need to know which of the files or folders the culprits behind all this hidden bloat. Also there should be a print option to get it on paper.

Mac OS X: conventional places where binary files should live

I've downloaded an application that is a command-line application, and want to put it somewhere where I can run it from the command-line without having to type the path explicitly. What are the conventional paths used for something like this? ? Are there different options, one if I want it for all users, and one if I want it for just a particular user, like my administrator account? Or should I put it in its own directory under the Applications directory, and add it to the path? If so, which file controls where the path is set?

How to selectively route network traffic through VPN on Mac OS X Leopard?

I don't want to send all my network traffic down to VPN when I'm connected to my company's network (via VPN) from home. For example, when I'm working from home, I would like to be able to backup all my files to the Time Capsule at home and still be able to access the company's internal network. I'm using Leopard's built-in VPN client. I've tried unchecking "Send all traffic over VPN connection." If I do that I will lose access to my company's internal websites be it via curl or the web browser (though internal IPs are still reachable). It'd be ideal if I can selectively choose a set of IPs or domains to be routed through VPN and keep the rest on my own network. Is this achievable with Leopard's built-in VPN client?

Securely erasing all data from a hard drive

I am about to sell my old desktop PC and I am cautious about some of my sensitive information being available to the purchaser, even after reformatting the hard-drive, using data recovery software. How can I securely wipe the hard drive so that the data on it cannot be recovered? Although I specifically want help with my Windows PC, it wouldn't hurt if there were suggestions for Macs as well.

Does an equivalent of Time Machine exist for Windows?

A simple Google search for "Time Machine for Windows" results in a flurry of different little apps. But instead of relying on forum anecdotes and advertisements, I call on the much wiser Super User beta community for some depth on this one. Having Time Machine running on Leopard is like a warm, fuzzy blanket of comfort that I never got with RAID, rsync, or SyncToy on Windows. I'm not asking the community what the "best" backup software for Windows is, but instead: Is there any true Time Machine clone for Windows, one that includes as many of the following as possible: Completely transparent, "set-it-and-forget-it" backup Incremental backups (changes only) for every hour for a day, every day for a month, and every week until the backup disk is full Ability to rebuild from this backup disk in case of main drive meltdown (the backup doesn't have to be bootable; neither are Time Machine disks) Extremely easy to use UI (target user == novice). Bonus points for a beautiful UI As originally …
