Overcoming the 1024 character limit with setx

I am trying to set environment variables using the command, such as follows setx PATH "f:\common tools\git\bin;f:\common tools\python\app;f:\common tools\python\app\scripts;f:\common tools\ruby\bin;f:\masm32\bin;F:\Borland\BCC55\Bin;%PATH%" However, I get the following error if the value is more then 1024 characters long: WARNING: The data being saved is truncated to 1024 characters. SUCCESS: Specified value was saved. But some of the paths in the end are not saved in variable, I guess due to character limit as the error suggests.

How do I fix my USB drive to get its original 8GB size back?

My USB drive used to be originally 8GB when I bought it. I'm trying to reformatted in Windows 7 by right clicking on the drive and selecting . But the capacity only shows 250MB. Is there something I can do to get the original size back? Maybe it got partitioned in a weird way? The flash drive is a SanDisk Cruzer Micro 8GB. I got it from Wal-Mart but this is the same drive. http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Cruzer-Micro-Flash-SDCZ6-8192-A11/dp/B000UZN2ZK

How do I access MTP devices on the command line in Windows?

Most MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) devices show up in Windows File Explorer under their device name or a GUID, but they don't have a drive letter assigned. How can I access the files on such devices from the command line? Using either cmd.exe or PowerShell.

Windows 7's PATH and environment variables are corrupted

I have no clue, but lately I've been having this problem. After running my workstation suddenly something destroys PATH and lots of stuff stops working. Initially, my path had MANY directories listed (I use Windows 7 as a development box) and after some time, I only had 3-4 directories listed in my path left. I can't even open the System Properties dialog where I can see environment variables (because it uses shell variables to start it and it doesn't work). In short, I reboot every time. Any ideas what might cause that problem? I didn't run anything new/unusual lately. Only VmWare (but I've been using it in the past and didn't have that problem back then). I just checked, even is not defined. WTF?!

How to store SSH keys?

I've started using SSH keys instead of passwords just recently (thanks to GitHub, of course), so please keep in mind that I'm pretty new to this whole concept. Currently my keys simply lie under ~/.ssh, but I'm not sure if this is a good practice. E.g. if I have multiple machines, I'd need to duplicate my private keys, which I think is undesirable. Or, if my HDD goes kaput, then I'll lose those keys, which (I guess) is undesirable as well. So, what are best practices on storing SSH keys securely, conveniently, and reliably? Seems like using a smartcard is an option (see Smartcards for storing gpg/ssh keys (Linux) - what do I need?), is this the best one? Update: The reason for the question was that many services (like GitHub, AWS EC2) provide guides on how to set up SSH keys for using the service, but little to no background (like, what to do if you already have a key generated by [1], what are recommended security measures). And it's unclear whether that info is in fact unimportant, …

Select column from a table with Google Chrome

Is there an extension for Google Chrome that would allow me to select a column from a table on the webpage? For example when I want to copy text from just one column of a table. You can select any row or column in Firefox by holding the Ctrl key, and I was wondering if a similar feature is available in Chrome.

How do I clear out the ssh-agent entries (on Mac OS X )?

I'm running Mac OS X, and it appears that after SSHing to several machines, using identity files, my 'ssh-agent' builds up a lot of identity / keys and then sometimes offers too many to a remote machine, causing them to kick me off before connecting: Received disconnect from 10.12.10.16: 2: Too many authentication failures for cwd It's pretty obvious what's happening, and this page talks about it in more detail: SSH servers only allow you to attempt to authenticate a certain number of times. Each failed password attempt, each failed pubkey/identity that is offered, etc, take up one of these attempts. If you have a lot of SSH keys in your agent, you may find that an SSH server may kick you out before allowing you to attempt password authentication at all. If this is the case, there are a few different workarounds. Rebooting clears the agent and then everything works OK again. I can also add this line to my file to force it to use password authentication: Anyhow, I saw the note on the p…

Windows equivalent to UNIX "time" command

So, Unix has a command that lets users time their code/other things. I was wondering if the Windows command line has anything similar. Also, I asked a previous question regarding the Linux command line here. Can we do the same for Windows? If so, how?

How can I take a screenshot that includes the mouse cursor?

When taking screen shots for use in tutorials, it would be really helpful to include the mouse cursor in the picture, but I've found that most screenshot tools (including those that ship with Windows) hide the cursor from the screenshot. How can I take a screenshot on Windows which includes the mouse cursor?

How should I convert Markdown (or similar) to a Word Document?

Here's the deal: In school I want to write my actual content in Markdown (using [Q10] or Notepad++) in school so that I can actually focus on writing without the ugliness of Word 2000 on my screen, but I have the problem of actually converting the Markdown into the final Word document so that I can set the line spacing, margins, cover page, etc. How can I accomplish this? I should also mention that I'm running said programs (except Word) off of my flash drive as PortableApps, the school computers run DeepFreeze, and I do have commandline access.

Linux "Top" command for Windows Powershell?

I am looking for a PowerShell cmdlet that can provide similar functionality to the Linux Top app. Something that refreshes at some given interval and displays the process list with CPU % util. I have seen scripts that list CPU % utilization in a loop but something like top would be way more handy as we have setup SSH/Powershell access for management (I still prefer a putty shell!)

How can I open Google Chrome via command-line with a URL, in incognito mode?

When launching Chrome from the Windows command line I can pass arguments like so: I can also pass a URL to open: Each work fine on their own, but I can't get them to work together. What I want is to launch it with a URL, and open in its own tab, and hide the URL, buttons, etc., like a utility window, but I do want it resizable.
