Where should the XDG_CONFIG_HOME variable be defined?
The XDG specification talks about the variable, but does not specify where it should be defined. Should we define it in , or is it the window manager's config file that needs to define this? I tried declaring it in /etc/environment as but that didn't work, as it seems that $HOME is not defined when is parsed. The only documentation I could find online was for Gentoo, where it was declared in I'm using Ubuntu. What would be the general solution for Debian based distros?
Permission denied when accessing VirtualBox shared folder when member of the vboxsf group
I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 (guest) on Windows 7 (host) with the guest additions installed. I have an auto-mount folder that maps to my D: drive on the host which I can access using - however, even when my user (ross) is a member of the vboxsf group I get a permission denied error when attempting to explore it. I have restarted since adding my user to the vboxsf group. This should work because I am a member of the group (which has rwx rights), so why doesn't it?
How to auto detect text file encoding?
There are many plain text files which were encoded in variant charsets. I want to convert them all to UTF-8, but before running iconv, I need to know its original encoding. Most browsers have an option in encodings, however, I can't check those text files one by one because there are too many. Only having known the original encoding, I then can convert the texts by . Is there any utility to detect the encoding of plain text files? It DOES NOT have to be 100% perfect, I don't mind if there're 100 files misconverted in 1,000,000 files.
How to get list of dependencies of non-installed RPM package?

grep to find files that contain ^M (Windows carriage return)
I use Linux. There is a pesky ^M (Windows cariage return) somewhere hidden in thousands of configuration files, and I have to find it, because it makes the server fail. How do I find ^M among a directories hierarchy full of configuration files? I think I can not enter ^M on the bash command line. But I have it in a text file that I called m.txt
Does Windows 7 support UTC as BIOS time?
Since I live in Germany, my timezone is GMT+1 (or GMT+2 in the summertime period). Previous Windows versions were not able to have the hardware clock set to UTC, and the Windows time to the local time. That was / is a big mess, since almoust every other OS is using UTC preferedly. Is this fixed in Windows 7 and is it now possible to use UTC in the BIOS and local time in Windows?
Copy files in Linux, avoid the copy if files do exist in destination
I need to copy a /home/user folder from one hard disk to another one. It has 100,000 files and around 10G size. I use sometimes I get some errors due to broken links, permissions and so on. So I fix the error, and need to start again the copy. I wonder how could I tell the command "cp", once it tries to copy again, not to copy files again if they exist in the destination folder.

What's a good solution for file-tagging in linux?
I've been looking for a way to tag my files and search/filter them based on those tags. Here are my (updated) requirements : any file readable by the user can be tagged freely a user can search for files matching one or several tags files can be moved around without losing the previously associated tags the system could be backed up easily no dependencies on any desktop environment if any gui is involved, there must be a cli fallback I've been hoping for some basic filesystem & coreutils hackery to handle this, but I haven' thought about this hard enough yet. Meanwhile I'll review beagle and metatracker, which have been mentionned here, and see how they perform. Ok so beagle has huge gnome dependencies, and tracker is okish, but still has some dependencies I don't like... Been doing some more research, and the way to go could very well be extended file attributes. That's a native solution for most recent filesystems, but they aren't very well supported yet (most coreutils destroys the…
Turn off change file extension warning in Windows 7
Is there a way to turn off the file extension rename dialog in Windows 7? The one that prompts you Rename: If you change a filename extension, the file might become unusable. Are you sure you want to change it?
What "allocation unit size" should I use for a drive with a single NTFS partition?
I'm formatting a 1TB external hard drive as a single NTFS partition. This drive is mainly meant for storing media. Should I choose something other than the default ? The options range from 512 bytes to 64K. Are there any guidelines that I should use with partitions storing other data? Should I stop poking around and just leave it at "default"?
Back button of Adobe PDF Reader after clicking a hyperlink whose target is on the same document
PDF documents have hyperlinks to the contents on the same document (analogous to "#section" hrefs for an HTML document). Where's the back button to go back to the page I was on (where I clicked the hyperlink). Let's say I'm on the index of a PDF tutorial, page 4, and I click on Chapter 2's hyperlink in the index that takes me to page 38. Now, if I want to go back to page 4 again, which button or shortcut should I use?
How do you type Unicode characters using hexadecimal codes?
This is in Windows, but answers for other operating systems can be handy to others. Most guides say something to the effect of "hold down the Alt key and type in the code on the keypad". This works fine for decimal codes (like 65 for 'A'), but not for hexadecimal codes (like U+0041 for 'A'). Some applicatons provide other facilities that will allow hexadecimal Unicode character codes to be typed and then transformed. Word allows you to type the code (such as 200f) and then convert it to Unicode by typing Alt-X. I'm looking for a general method of doing this that will work with the standard input.
How can I produce high CPU load on Windows?
For testing purposes I need to generate high CPU load on a Windows Server 2003. I cannot install any software but have to make do with what Windows provides. What would be the best way to achieve that?
How can I wipe a broken hard disk drive before sending it back to the manufacturer for maintenance?
The hard drive of my laptop died, the manufacturer wants me to send it so that they can investigate, but I'm concerned that the drive might contain sensitive information. When I say the drive is broken, the drive won't be recognized by my OS (meaning I can't use standard tools to wipe it) and I keep hearing clicking noises. Is there something I can do to wipe the data without further damaging the hard drive? The hard diskdrive is a standard drive, not a SSD.
How do I see the XML of my DOCX document?
I want to see my in its pure XML format. Various application like internet browsers and visual studio will open the file up in Word for me. I've also tried renaming the document to extension and it just opens up in notepad showing a bunch of unintelligible text.
How is the capacity of a harddisk faked?
I was reading about magical Chinese drives. How would this be done? The post talks about a 'looped mode' and comments suggest having a different controller to lie to the OS. I went and bought one of these devices, tried it and it worked as advertized (overwriting data when it was full), although when I formatted it, it started showing its 'true' capacity. How is this achieved?
Why does WMI Provider Host (WmiPrvSE.exe) keep spiking my CPU?
I generally keep my laptop on 24x7, and at the end of the day it's really annoying to have my thighs burnt because over overheating. The overheating seems to be a result of WMI Provider Host (WmiPrvSE.exe) spiking the CPU utilization to 25% every few minutes. Why does this happen? I have an HP Envy 14 (with the HP bundled crap) running on Windows 7 Home Premium. (Note: Based on @nhinkle's past observations, it seems that HP Wireless Manager might be the culprit, is there any way to confirm this?) This question was a Super User Question of the Week.
