Make 7-Zip extract an archive directly to a directory
Whenever I extract an archive using 7-Zip, it performs a two step operation. First it extracts the contents of the archives to a temporary folder, then Windows copies the files from the temporary folder to the target directory. The second part of this operation can take some time, especially if there were a large number of small files in the archive. It seems like the operation could be sped up if 7-Zip just extracted the files directly to the target directory to start with. Is there a way to make it do this?
Apt-cache: How to list all installed packages with version number?

How can I logout an open, remote SSH session?
I sshed into a Linux machine (bash shell) from a public Windows machine (in our lab) and forgot to log out. I'm now back at my seat in another room and I am too lazy to walk back and log out that session; I can ssh into the Linux machine from my current PC though. Can I force-logout the other session from a new SSH session? When I ssh to the Linux box from my current PC and type command, I can see that I'm still logged in there; my name is listed twice - one for the current session and another for the session from lab PC. I don't have root privileges on the said machine, but I guess that shouldn't matter as I'm just trying to log out myself.

How can I force Safari to perform a full page reload, without using the mouse?
I'm using Safari to preview web pages as I develop them on my local server. I've got 'Disable Caches' checked in the Develop menu. And yet Safari is still working from a cached version of a stylesheet that's linked from the HTML file being displayed. I can sometimes override this by Option-clicking the reload button in the location bar, but I want to refresh the page automatically when I save the CSS file. At the moment I'm doing it using an AppleScript that's bound to the Save action in my text editor. I could see using Keyboard Maestro instead. But I need some consistent way to force Safari to do a full reload from the keyboard.

Command line SVG and image file viewer in Linux?
Is there any command line (pipeable) graph viewer for SVG, JPG, and PNG images? I'm particularly looking for a way to pipe the graphs/images to the program, instead of using files, so there must be an option to specify the file type/extension. Though works for PS/PDF generated by dot programs, I'd like to know whether there are alternatives for supporting SVG image files.
vimdiff: Jump to next difference inside line?
is very handy for comparing files. However, I often use it on files with long lines and relatively few differences inside the lines. vimdiff will correctly highlight differences inside a line (whole line pink, differing characters red). In these cases, it would be nice to be able to jump to the next difference inside the line. You can jump to the "next difference" (]c), but this will jump to the next line with a difference. Is there a way to go to the next different character inside the current line?
How to skip "Calculating" time when copying files using Windows explorer?
When copying hundreds of small files/folders on Windows, the calculating phase of Windows often takes a really long time before anything starts actually being copied. Is there a setting to tell Windows to start copying right away and/or skip the whole pre-calculation phase?
How to leave the open file in eclipse tab after search?
when we open a file from "Package Explorer" in eclipse, after we use it, it will leave in the tabs. If we open a file from "Search" result, then after we search another keyword, it will disappear, we need to see the search result to find out that. Is there any solution that I can leave the opened tab in the tabs after I opened from Search panel ?

How to copy a file to a directory in DOS, and create directories if necessary?
How can I copy a file using DOS commands into a directory structure that may not yet exist? I need to be able to force the creation of the directory path to the target file location if that location doesn't already exist. For example, there is already a file.txt in this location: And I want to copy it to but at this time and all the subdirectories may or may not yet exist. Basically, I am looking for a "copy and create the target path if necessary" command. What would you recommend is the best way to achieve this?
Is VGA port hot-pluggable?
In meetings, I often see people detaching the VGA connector from one running laptop and connecting it to another, while the projector is still on. Is this 100% risk free, and OK by design of the VGA standard? If there's a risk involved in hot-plugging VGA, can it be removed by turning off or suspending either laptop, display, or both? I see this being done all the time without causing disaster, so clearly I'm not interested in answers stating "we do it all the time, so it should be OK!". I want to know if there's a risk - real or in theory - that something breaks when doing this. EDIT: I did an internet search on the topic, and I never found a clear statement as to why it is safe or unsafe to hot swap VGA devices. The typical form is a forum question asking basically the same question as I did, and the following types of statements Yes it's hot swappable! I do it all the time! It involves some kind of risk, so don't do it! You're some kind of moron if you think there's a risk, so just…

Why can't I name a folder or file 'CON' in Windows?
In all versions of Windows, we are unable to rename a file or a folder name as without third-party file renaming software. Trying to do this in Windows 7 results in an error: The specified device name is invalid. Trying to save a file as in Notepad leads to a similar error: This file name is reserved for use by Windows. Choose another name and try again. Why can't we name a file or folder in Windows?
Windows 7: Image thumbnails fail to appear
All right, I've got a pretty strange one here. Since I installed Windows 7 on this machine some time ago, image thumbnails have never worked properly. For the vast majority of images, they completely fail to show up, showing the icon of the default image viewing application instead. Please note that the “Always show icons, never thumbnails” option in folder options is not checked. I've taken a screenshot demonstrating the problem, here: Sometimes, a few image thumbnails will show up correctly, maybe about one in ten, with the rest failing as well. Another screenshot, with a handful of thumbnails visible, can be seen here: Windows Explorer does not appear to make any effort to populate the missing thumbnails, and there is no appreciable CPU usage. I can leave a window with missing thumbnails open all night and they will still never appear. Newly created images never generate thumbnails, only images that have been on the system since day one will occasionally show them. This leads me to…

How to make Outlook show the unread count of a folder, including its sub-folders?
I have a folder in MS Outlook called Technology, and under technology I have Software and Hardware. If I setup rules to automatically forward email to Software or Hardware folder, I don't realize there are any unread mail unless I expand the Technology Folder. I would expect Technology itself to show that there are unread items in its folder structure. Is there a way to do this?
