Change DNS Server From Terminal (or script) on Mac OS X

How can I change my DNS server from the Terminal on Mac OS X? [I need this because my DNS is not working correctly with my VPN. Sometimes it's using the DNS for my main connection, and sometimes it's using the DNS specified for the VPN (which it should).]

How to upload a file from the command line with FTP or SSH?

I have never done this before and I am creating a bash shell script to do this for me. I will also be connecting via ssh to do some things (which I already know how to do). So maybe there is a way to upload files via ssh so I can do it all in one connection? How can I do this?

Mac OS X: at command not working

I am going to schedule a job by using at command. Here I tried the following command: I saw the job is scheduled by using at -l. However, I saw no echo out. I guess that I may need to add user to at.allow file. I cannot find at.allow in my Mac (Snow Leopard). Not sure what I need to do to test this at command?

What happens when more RAM is installed than the motherboard supports?

I have a free RAM slot and some spare memory that will fit my computer. However the problem is my motherboard only supports 2GB and I have 2GB installed. What would happen if I plugged the spare memory in the RAM slot? The following things spring to mind: Nothing will happen It will work, computer becomes faster Computer becomes slower Explosion Undetermined (Any of the above) Does anyone have any experience of this? Update: Egged on by you zealous lot, I went ahead and stuck the extra memory in. It booted up! Unfortunately, the hunch of some has been proved correct. The memory is reported at the capped limit, rather then the actual available. A shame then! But thank you all for your suggestions, speculations and stories. For your reference, I am using a Dell Insprion 6000 with 2gb installed, latest drivers. I attempted to add 512mb, with no success.

Better Ubuntu Fonts

I have been using Ubuntu for a while. I like it. I like it a lot. But once in a while, when I switch to Windows, I feel better because I really like the font. It feels really much pleasant to watch windows font. I installed windows fonts on my system and changed all the the default font settings to Tribuchet 10pt from Sans. It feels better, but still not as good. Oh, BTW, I love the default ubuntu console font. Monospace 10 really rocks. But Sans, oh please. What is the default font on Windows. How do I enable it on Ubuntu. If it is paid, licensed, or illegal, I don't care, I just want better fonts on my Ubuntu system. And, also, on a Laptop with LCD screen, should Sub-Pixel Smoothing be enabled? Update: I tried different fonts for a while on my system, and I think I could do a lot better. I am far from satisfied. The default Sans font, is Ugly, imho. The Arial, Tribuchet MS and some other MS fonts, don't render properly, Tribuchet MS has a problem with e. An extra line on top. I hate…

How can I monitor all and any Internet traffic from my home PC?

I would like to monitor all and any Internet traffic from my home PC to see what programs installed on my home machine are accessing the Internet. I thought I could use Fiddler for this, but I noticed Firefox traffic doesn't show up by default; you need to do some setup. What options do I have to monitor all traffic?

Changing Firefox Tab Cycle Order

When you use Ctrl-Tab in Firefox, you move through tabs in the order that they are listed in the tab bar at the top of the window. I would prefer that when I use Ctrl-Tab the next tab that I switch to is the most recently used tab. That way if I have two tabs I am using frequently I can easily switch between them without having to manually modify the ordering of the tabs via drag/drop. This is a feature that Opera has which I find to be very productive. Does anyone know of a setting or plug-in that will accomplish this for me?

Can I put keyboards in the dishwasher?

After a few years, keyboards develop a fine patina of what I refer to as "hand jam". I've heard that they can be safely cleaned in the dishwasher as long as you let them thoroughly dry out (like for a week or two). Maybe not the fancy ones with the LCD displays and what not, but the basic keyboard, yes. Has anyone tried this?

How to Determine which Firefox Add-ons are Using the Most Memory

I love Firefox for its add-ons. I have a lot of them installed, which obviously increases memory use. But it seems that some add-ons are better than others in that department. Does anyone know a way to figure out approximately how much memory each add-on is using? Obviously, I could disable them all and try them one at a time, but I'm hoping for an easier way...

Which malfunctions cause old computers to slow down and crash?

I've had a few computers of my own break after a few years of use, and I've seen computers owned by friends and family do the same thing. They either slow down (even running the original software they shipped with) or crash more often (kernel panic/BSOD, freezing, etc). All computers eventually fail, and not always in easily explainable ways. For example, my first computer was a MacBook Pro. After about 3 and a half years of use, it started to freeze a few times a week, then reliably every day. OS X would stop responding; my mouse moved, but absolutely nothing responded. It ended up lasting more than four years, but I was in the habit of saving my work every time I paused in typing, and kept rigorous backups. I've also seen old family computers running early versions of Windows completely freeze (no mouse movement) just after completing startup. And I've seen a 4 year old 12" PowerBook G4 run like molasses even after having been wiped and reset to factory settings and OS. What causes …

How computers display raw, low-level text and graphics

My ever-growing interest in computers is making me ask deeper questions, that we don't seem to have to ask anymore. Our computers, at boot, as far as I understand it, are in text mode, in which a character can be displayed using the software interrupt when . We've all seen the famous booting font that always looks the same, regardless of what computer is booting. So, how on earth do computers output graphics at the lowest level, say, below the OS? And also, surely graphics aren't outputted a pixel at a time using software interrupts, as that sounds very slow? Is there a standard that defines basic outputting of vertices, polygons, fonts, etc. (below OpenGL for example, which OpenGL might use)? What makes me ask is why OS' can often be fine without official drivers installed; how do they do that? Apologies if my assumptions are incorrect. I would be very grateful for elaboration on these topics!
