How can I extract .rar files on the Mac?

Is there anything built-in that does this? (E.g. command line tools.) Or are there any third-party apps? Update: I like The Unarchiver, but vote up your favourite, or add it as an answer if it isn’t there.

Is there a way to listen to the input sound on Mac OS X?

Is there any easy way to listen to the input on a Mac? For example, assume I have a microphone hooked up to the input (i.e. line in) of my Mac, and I have headphones hooked up to the output of my Mac: is there any way that I can hear what I say in the microphone through the headphones? This is very easy in Windows XP: simply go to the sound settings for recording devices, check "select" on the line in, and increase the volume – this makes it so you can hear what is said into the microphone. It has to be in real time; a solution where you record the input and then playback the output later doesn't help.

How to move windows that open up offscreen?

I have a dual monitor setup, and I recently played around with the positioning settings, and some of my single window applications do the favour of preserving where they were last closed, and opening in the same position later. Unfortunately, that now places them out of the viewable area of my screens! Is there some way to force a particular window into the viewable area?

My fingers are cold when using my computer - solutions?

I am a programmer and sit at a computer ten hours a day - and even though the rest of me is nice and warm, my fingers are as cold as ice. Are there any gadgets or tricks to keep your fingers warm while typing/mousing? Gloves do not seem like a good solution, since it hinders the movement of the fingers. I have sometimes put my extra laptop next to the mouse pad so that it vents hot air on the mouse - and that works. However it is not very practical, plus it only works for one hand (and not very well).

What is the origin of the UNIX $ (dollar) prompt?

The UNIX prompt uses a symbol to indicate that your input is expected. I was wondering why this symbol was chosen—if there is a reason. Dollar just seems a little unexpected. A symbol would have been more suggestive in my opinion.

Why does MDS run wild in Mac OS X 10.6?

I've been having trouble with the MDS process running wild on my MacBook Pro 13". I've read on other support forums indicating that improperly formatted external drives can be an issue, but I have no drives connected. How can this problem be debugged and fixed? If it helps, I do have a massive Mail archive. I have not turned off the indexing of this archive, because I haven't been able to find a correlation between the two, but I'm considering it. (This might be normal right after doing an upgrade from 10.5 to 10.6, in which case the Spotlight search index needs to be rebuilt by . But in this case it's been a few weeks.)

Is there any 'sudo' command for Windows?

I always work on a non-administrator account on my Windows computer. Sometimes I need to install programs which requires administrator access. As I mostly use the Windows command prompt, is there a Windows command to escalate privileges, similar to the Linux terminal command ?

Looking for HTTP debugging proxy for Mac similar to Fiddler on Windows

In previous jobs when I've worked on a Windows machine, I've used Fiddler for viewing HTTP transactions and debugging. I'm specifically looking to monitor the HTTP transactions for an ajax site I'm working on to verify that the site is doing what I expect. Rewriting HTTP (as provided by Fiddler) is a nice-to-have, but not essential. Can anybody recommend something similar for use on a Mac?

Insert Unicode characters via the keyboard?

I am familiar with inserting an ASCII character into a text document by using 'Alt+ASCII code' on the NumPad keys (e.g. Alt+130 inserts an é character). Is there a similar way to insert a Unicode character via the keyboard using the unicode value given in Windows Character Map?
