How do I disable "you need to format this disk" message in Windows Vista/7?

I've started using TrueCrypt to encrypt a partition on an external USB hard drive. I've opted for using a raw partition as opposed to a file container. But here's the annoyance. Whenever I connect this drive to a computer running Vista or Windows 7, I get the message popup "You need to format the disk in drive J: before you can use it". The default option is "Format disk", and I'm afraid one of these days I'll accidentally trigger it. Is there any way to disable this message?

How to force Windows to rename a file with a special character?

I have a song that Windows can't play because there is a question mark in the name of the file. So I try to rename it and Windows complains whether I try it in Explorer or from command prompt. Error I get when trying to copy, rename, or move is: The Filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect Is there a Windows way to force a rename in this case? Update I'll keep an eye on this question, but after 13 answers and many attempts (aside form 3rd party solutions) it seems that Windows can't do this (or at least my windows can't, no short names). So I'm accepting the answer which was my original solution anyway of using Linux. It would be nice to see Windows handle this somehow, so don't stop just because I've accepted this answer, the question still stands!

Windows 7 ALT-TAB - How to turn off previewing the window

Possible Duplicate: Disable or delay alt-tab Aero Peek effect in Windows 7 In win7, when we hit alt-tab a nice preview comes up. This makes me happy. But if I linger just a moment too long thinking about what window to switch to, whatever window happens to be highlighted gets displayed, hiding the preview. Move the mouse around and windows flip all over the place haphazardly. This makes me sad. Is there a way to stop the preview of windows from happening so I can alt-tab without worrying about the list of windows being hidden from me by the evil usability "experts" at microsoft (I've decided Catbert secretly heads that department too).

How to create my own certificate chain?

I would like to set up my own OCSP Responder for testing purposes, and this requires me to have a Root certificate with a few certificates generated from it. I've managed to create a self-signed certificate using , and I want to use it as the Root certificate. The next step would be to create the derived certificates, however, I can't seem to find the documentation on how to do this. Does anyone know where I can find this information? Edit: In retrospect, my question is not yet completely answered, and to clarify the problem, I'll represent my certificate chain like this: Root > A > B > C > ... I am currently able to create the Root and A certificates via the below, but I haven't found how to make a longer chain: This command implicitly depends on the root certificate, for which it finds the required info within the OpenSSL configuration file, however, certificate B must only rely on A, which is not registered in the config file, so the previous command won't work here. What command s…

Selecting whole column except first X (header) cells in Excel

I know I can select all cells in a particular column by clicking on column header descriptor (ie. A or AB). But is it possible to then exclude a few cells out of it, like my data table headings? Example I would like to select data cells of a particular column to set Data Validation (that would eventually display a drop down of list values defined in a named range). But I don't want my data header cells to be included in this selection (so they won't have these drop downs displayed nor will they be validated). What if I later decide to change validation settings of these cells? How can I selection my column then? A sidenote I know I can set data validation on the whole column and then select only those cells that I want to exclude and clear their data validation. What I would like to know is is ti possible to do the correct selection in the first step to avoid this second one. I tried clicking on the column descriptor to select the whole column and then CTRL-click those cells I don't w…

Variables in batch file not being set when inside IF?

I have two examples of very simple batch files: Assigning a value to a variable: Which, as expected, results in: However, if I place the same two lines inside an IF NOT DEFINED block: This unexpectedly results in: This shouldn't have anything to do with the IF, clearly the block is being executed. If I define BAR above the if, only the text from the PAUSE command is displayed, as expected. What gives? Follow up question: Is there any way to enable delayed expansion without setlocal? If I were to call this simple example batch file from inside another, the example sets FOO, but only LOCALLY. For example: testcaller.bat test.bat This displays: In this case, it appears that I have to enable delayed expansion in the CALLER, which may be a hassle.

Compose key on Windows

On Linux, the Compose key is a great way to enter many symbols. E.g. em-dash — by pressing Compose then - - - ö by pressing Compose then : o Euro € by pressing Compose then C = (The Compose key function can be assigned to various keyboard keys, such as right/left Alt, right/left Windows key.) I really miss the Compose key when using Windows. I've looked but so far haven't found any way to get equivalent Compose key functionality on Windows. Does anyone know of how to do it?

How can I explain why DRM cannot work?

I am looking for the shortest comprehensive way to explain to people that are trying to use DRM as a technology to prevent users from using their data in some fashion deemed undesirable, why their solution cannot work by definition. Ideally I'd like something that: Covers why technically it is impossible to have people access local data, but only in such-and-such a way Imparts an understanding of why this is, to avoid follow-on "But what if" rebuttals Is intuitive enough and short enough that even a politician (j/k) could grasp it When faced with this situation I try to be clear and concise, but I usually end up failing at least on one of these points. I'd really like to have a 'stock' answer that I can use in the future.

How do I replace-paste yanked text in vim without yanking the deleted lines?

So I usually find myself copying text from one point to another while overwriting old text where the new is pasted: Suppose I visual-mark and ank it. Now I select (which could be anything, not necessarily just a word) and aste the . However, if I now do the same with it will be replaced with instead of . So how do I keep the text that is in the buffer from being swapped with the text that I am currently overwriting? Edit 1 Although I quite like the reigister suggestions (I think I will start using registers more, now that I discovered the command), I am going with a modification of jinfield's answer, because I do not use the swapping mode. does the trick perfectly. Edit 2 I was too fast; romainl's solution is precisely what I was looking for, without the hack in Edit 1. Actually, is enough! So, changing accepted answer.

Linux: Continuously synchronize files, one way

Scenario: An IDE is set up on a Linux desktop box, editing PHP files locally. Every time I save a file, I want this change to appear on the linux server where Apache is running. The server has ssh (and samba and nfs for that matter). As a reference, when I edited files on Windows, I finally came over WinSCP as the exact tool I needed - WinSCP have just this feature present, with initial synch and then continuous update, using the filesystem watch service: "Keep Remote Directory up to Date". On Linux, one could argue that sshfs could be employed to sidestep the need for synchronization entirely. On windows, a samba-share would do the same. However, I want the IDE to work with local files (on a SSD disk!), not having to go over the network to do PHP indexing and whatnots, which takes ages. But sshfs might be a part of the solution nevertheless - so that the continuous synchronization just needed to be done between two local directories. Any ideas or pointers?

Disable “Ctrl”+mouse wheel zooming in Chrome?

I'm a normal-sighted person and I would like to view pages at 100% all the time. I use keyboard shortcuts that involve Ctrl a lot, so about twenty times a day I accidentally hit Ctrl at the same time that I'm scrolling, which results in the page being reflowed and repainted. This is annoying because it can take up to 30 seconds to fix the issue, depending on how complex the site layout is. On sites with dynamic layout such as Google Docs the problem is more serious; accidentally hitting Ctrl+mouse wheel corrupts the display and forces me to refresh the page entirely, sometimes causing me to loose information in the process. I would like to either decouple Ctrl+mouse wheel from zoom, or disable zoom functionality altogether. This is possible on Firefox by using about:config; is there a similar way to edit detailed settings in Chrome? Would I have access to the detailed settings if I used Chromium instead of Chrome? I'll probably jump ship back to Firefox if I can't solve this problem. …

In other words, I'd like for the host to have direct access to (at least some of the) files inside the .vdi file.
