CPU Cores: The more the better?
I currently have a dual-core processor at work and a quad-core at home. I've noticed both PCs are pretty equal as far as launching applications/surfing the web. The difference I can see is that my dual-core is 2.8GHz and my quad-core is 2.4GHz. Is it better to have a dual-core with a fast clock speed or a quad-core with a mediocre clock speed?
Dead-simple FTP server for Windows?
I Googled for it, tried a few of them, but I find that even the simplest I found (www.xlightftpd.com) is way too complicated. I just need this: single EXE or portable (ie. no installer, just unzip -> run) the root directory is where the server EXE lives any use can connect and read/write. No need for user accounts. This is for a test lab as an alternative to setting up Samba on a Linux host. Does someone know of an application that does this? I'm looking for the FTP equivalent of the Mongoose web server. Thank you. Edit: Thanks for the feedback. I found one that just works, FTPdmin, although it runs in a DOS box instead of providing a basic GUI. Unless someone knows of a GUI alternative, I'll just use that application. Edit: Here's how to launch sfk (Swiss File Knife): Note: sfk works in active mode; the client must type "passive" to switch to passive mode Even with "-verbose", there's no real-time indication that a big download is running as expected. Edit: I took a look at the other…

How to turn off screen with shortcut in Linux?
Since my monitor takes an awful lot of time to turn back on after being physically turned off, I'm looking for a command or a simple utility to turn off my screen with a shortcut. Setting a black screensaver is not satisfactory; I want the screen to "hibernate" (the same effect I would get by turning off the computer while leaving the screen physically on). The same question for Windows: How can I make my screen blank by a shortcut?

Why does the partition start on sector 2048 instead of 63?
I had two drives partitioned the same and running two RAID partitions on each. One died and I replaced it under warranty for the same model. While trying to partition it, the first partition can only start on sector 2048, instead of 63 that was before. Drive have different geometry as previous and remaining ones. (Fewer heads/more cylinders) Old drive: Remanufactured drive received from warranty: Why is that?
Don't exit full screen when pressing escape in apps like Safari on Lion
In OS X Lion, pressing the ESC key exits full screen mode. Unfortunately, and especially when using Safari, ESC is used for other functions, such as in Javascript keystroke event handling. I don't want Lion to exit full screen mode when pressing escape, but I can't find a place to disable that functionality. I already know the keyboard shortcut to Enter/exit full screen mode (Cmd-Ctrl-F). I want to disable the ESC shortcut. I've been Googling, but cannot find any answers.

How to use A-B repeat feature of VLC?
Apparently VLC has an A-B repeat feature, but how do I use it? There's even a related feature request. I can't find any GUI controls for it (Windows VLC version 1.1.9) I am aware there is a possible command-line method, but I seek a more user-friendly GUI/keyboard solution. I ask specifically for VLC, but other free video players that support both mirroring (flipping horizontally) and A-B repeat are acceptable. Background info: I have a video of a dance performance I need to practice. A-B repeat to concentrate on a single part at a time Mirroring to make following it more natural
Linewrap in Org-mode of Emacs?
Does Org-mode of Emacs support linewrapping? I know in the "regular" mode of Emacs there will just be a little sideways-u-turn on the right and on the left on the line after, and there's no scrolling necessary. However, there are only arrows pointing left and right. Any ideas?
Can I sleep one of the displays on a multi-monitor setup?
I want to be able to 'put the display to sleep' on one of my two monitors when it isn't needed, so it doesn't distract me or use unnecessary power. Ideally, the display would be asleep, but the OS would remain in dual-monitor mode, so I could still have a variety of windows open in the sleeping monitor's display space, which would mean I wouldn't have to keep switching between single- and dual-monitor modes. That said, I'd also consider a solution that made it easy to toggle between single- and dual-monitor modes without navigating several system menus.
How to open a file for editing in Administrator mode?
I have .config files set to open in Notepad++. The files I edit are typically in protected locations (e.g. c:\windows\, c:\program files..., etc..) thus requiring administrator access. I'd like to be able to double click on a .config file and have Notepad++ open with Administrator privileges. It's fine if the UAC prompt comes up. Is there a way to do that?
How can I log all process launches in Linux?

What command do I need to use to remove a file called `-rf`?
I did something crazy at some point that created a file called on my filesystem. Now I can't figure out how to delete it... I've tried: These just exit immediately, arrgh! Anyone know how to remove this file? Preferably without accidentally cleaning out my whole folder.
Linux: Is there something similar to "top" for I/O?
My disk often is utilized, but (and , a custom replacement) show nothing suspicious. Is there a way to sort processes by I/O (more specific: disk) utilization? EDIT Found out using that those strange processes are and . Seems to have to do with usual filesystem operations.
Mac: What's ~/.CFUserTextEncoding for?
So I have this file in my home dir. Google search results are less than ideal, filled with old ugly forum pages. Apple gives me an unrelated support article. ADC gives me an unrelated technote. All I can gather thus far is that it's related to Core Foundation, and, well, some user text encoding. Anyway: Why do I have it? Can I not have it? What's it for, what does it affect? What format is it in? Should I edit it manually? Could I, regardlessly?
