Overriding HOMEDRIVE and HOMEPATH as a Windows 7 user

My employer has an Active Directory group policy which sets my Windows 7 laptop HOMEDRIVE to "M:" (a mapped network drive) and my HOMEPATH to "\". Since I have read-only permissions for the root of that shared drive, I cannot create files or directories in my windows home directory. My attempts to work with the IT department have been unsuccessful. Is there a way for me to globally change these envars at boot or login time? I need for all applications to use alternate values (such as "C:" and "\Users\myname"). I have some installed utilities (like gvim and others) that store preference files in the user's home directory. IMPORTANT: Changing these envars under "System Properties > Environment Variables" does not work. I have tried setting these as both User and System Variables (including a reboot). Typing in a DOS window clearly shows that my settings are ignored. Also, using "Start in" in a Windows shortcut will also not solve this, as I need things like Explorer context menu items (…

How to change internal page numbers in the meta data of a PDF?

I have a pdf document I created through non-Acrobat means (printing to pdf, then merging a bunch of pdfs), but I'd like to manually change the page numbers (i.e. the first several pages are simply title pages, the page that is labeled "page 1" is really the 7th sheet of the pdf). What's the simplest (and ideally, free) way to do this? To be clear, I am not trying to change the numbers on the pages themselves, but the page numbers in the "metadata" that the pdf stores (the pages themselves are already numbered correctly; I just want "go to page 1" to go to the page labeled 1, which could be sheet 7). For what it's worth, I'm on Windows, though I have access to Macs as well.

Can someone explain the 'PasswordAuthentication' in the /etc/ssh/sshd_config file?

On this page, the explanation given is: The option PasswordAuthentication specifies whether we should use password-based authentication. For strong security, this option must always be set to yes. But it fails to provide any use case scenarios that clarifies when a Yes or no would be appropriate. Can someone please elaborate further?

Why is the 'System' process listening on port 443?

I am having problems starting my Apache server, because port 443 is already in use. It turns out, the system process (PID 4) uses the port 443. I don't have IIS installed, the services.msc shows (predictably) no Exchange server running, nor WWW-Services, nor IIS. I have no idea how to find out what service uses that port, short of just disabling each service one after the other, and I am not even sure that would help. I would be grateful if someone could point me towards how I can get my SSL port back, thank you :) P.S.: Of course "just switch Apache to another port for SSL" would solve the problem of not being able to start Apache. But I'd still like to know what is so insistent about hogging port 443. :) I by now took the 'hard route' and disabled services one after the other. It turned out that the "Routing and RAS" service was the culprit. Thank you all for the valuable input and the new tools in the combat against "WTF does my system do now?".

"Select to Copy and Middle Click to Paste" in Windows

Is there any application to mimic the "Select to Copy and Middle Click to Paste" behaviour in Windows? I was hoping to find an AutoHotkey script for this, but I couldn't. Maybe someone here could quickly hack one for this :).

Disable or delay Alt+Tab Aero Peek effect in Windows 7

In Windows 7 pressing Alt+Tab shows the transparent windows (Aero) effect. The screen change is distracting while I'm trying to figure out which window to switch to based on the thumbnail preview (which is sufficient for me most of the time). Is there any way to turn off the Aero Peek effect or delay its activation to something like 6 seconds or so? On the Taskbar the Aero Peek effect is brought up on-demand when I mouse over the actual thumbnails. This behavior is not an issue and if I have a choice, I do not want it to be turned off.

Change Windows 7 explorer "Edit" context menu action for jpg and other image file types

When I right click on a jpg file in Windows Explorer (Windows 7), I see that there is an "Edit" menu item. If I click this item, it opens the image in MSPaint. Blah. I have Paint.NET installed, and I'd like to change the "Edit" action to open the image in Paint.NET. How can I go about doing this?

What is the difference between various cable types like Cat 5, Cat 5e and Cat 6?

I'm just about to move house, so I'm going to have to disconnect and re-wire my network. Pretty much all the devices I have support Gigabit Ethernet. Should I go out and buy some decent network cables (and if so what type) or should I continue using my mix of Cat 5 cables I've acquired over the years. Does the type of cable really make a difference to my LAN performance?

How to make ls sort by file extension and then name?

By default the ls command sorts just by filename, but I want directories to appear before other file types. I might even want files to be sorted by extension, like the way Windows explorer sorts by the type column. Is there a way to do something similar with ls?

If I start a script that is going to take a long time, I inevitably realize it after I've started the script, and wish I had a way of doing some kind of alert once it finishes. So, for example, if I run: and press enter...how can I run another command once it finishes?

Finding out which app is using the webcam

Yesterday I was working on my laptop. Suddenly I noticed that the indicator light of the webcam was on, despite the fact that I wasn't making a video call or using the webcam in any other way at the moment. It freaked me out. It freaked me out that some unknown application on my computer was using my webcam without my permission, and possibly sending that video stream to god knows where on the Internet. In the end, it turned out to be Skype which was in the process of crashing. (Despite me making no calls at the time.) So that story ended well. But next time I see the webcam indicator light, I want to be ready. I want to be able to know exactly which app is using the webcam so I could destroy it. Does anyone know how I can find out which app is using the webcam? (I'm on Windows XP.)

If there are 13 Wifi channels, can I only use 13 Wifi devices on the same room?

As wikipedia reference, 802.11 standards (which defines Wi-fi networks) tell us that wireless networks works with 13 different channels on OFDM (depending on the release, a, b, g or n). From this I was wondering, if I have more than 13 machines on the same room (one room work for example with 50 notebooks), it would be impossible to connect all of them to internet at the same time? I mean, each device would use one specific channel to communicate with the acess point, limiting the acess point to 13 permanent connections. How does all this stuff really work?

I updated my MacBook Pro 13" to Lion a few weeks ago. I just found out that Apache Bench (apache2.2.19) is not working. It always shows this error, no matter what: apr_socket_recv: Connection reset by peer (54) I also did a clean install on my Mac Mini and it produced the same error. How can I fix this?
