Disable WLan if Wired/Cable Network is available

The question says it all. All i want is that my W-Lan connection should be disabled whenever a wired connection is available. What would be the easiest way to do that in Ubuntu/Gnome? In all guides (for instance some about guessnet) i found i had to configure my whole network configuration (WPA keys, DHCP, ...), but i find that a bit too complicated for such a simple use case. I just want to disable when is connected.

How do I kill a process that is dead but listening?

I'm developing an app that listens on port 3000. Apparently there's an instance of it still listening to the port because whenever I start it, it can't create a listener (C#, TcpListener, but that's irrelevant) because the port is already taken. Now, the app doesn't exist in the Task Manager, so I tried to find its PID and kill it, which led to this interesting result: I haven't seen this behaviour before and figured it was interesting enough to see if anyone has a solution. UPDATE: I started up Process Explorer and did a search for 3000 and found this: I right clicked on it and chose "Close Handle". It's no longer in Process Explorer, but still shows up in netstat and still stops the app from starting the listener. UPDATE 2: Found TCPView for Windows which show the process as . Like with CurrPorts, nothing happens when I try to close the connection in this tool.

Permissionless external drive with NTFS

I have an external hard disk which has 1 partition, formatted in NTFS. I use this drive on multiple computers with a different logins on different machines, Windows XP and Windows 7. All files are plain old files, not OS encrypted or compressed. Every now and then Windows 7 does not let me access some files, citing permission problems. I can circumvent this per case by taking ownership and setting appropriate permissions. This, however, is tedious. Is there a simple way to tell Windows to not enforce or store any permissions on any file/directory on a partition?

Run part of a bash script as a different user

I am in Ubuntu 9.04. Is there a way to make part of a script run as a different (non-root) user? If it helps, the part to be run as a different user occurs at the end of the script.

Create an alias in Windows XP

Back in school, I used to have a .login file along the lines of I'd like to do that sort of thing with my XP box here at work, but most of the resources I've found online seem fairly complicated and heavy-duty. Is there a way to do this that doesn't involve mucking about in the registry or running a large batch file? My original reason for asking this was that I only need the command line for one command in one specific folder, and I wanted to be able to get to that folder quickly when I launched the command line. But the accepted answer for this question is so good that I decided to ask about my original issue as a separate question: Change to default start folder for Windows command prompt.

Speed up OSX Spaces by reducing or eliminating the animation delay?

Is there any way to speed up the animation when you switch from one space to another on Mac OS X? I'd like to make the space-transition quicker, or even instantaneous. Does anybody know of any way to do this, or any software to do so?

Windows INSERT key anti-functionality accidentally triggers; how to stop it permanently?

We all use editing facilities to change a line of text as we are entering it. There are two principal editing modes within a line, a) "insert mode" which inserts non-editing characters at the point of the cursor, and shuffles text to the right, and b) "overwrite mode", in which non-editing characters simply overwrite whatever character the cursor selects. Overwrite mode IMHO is left from the days of green-screen CRTs. The only use I have ever found for it is drawing 2-D pictures in ASCII, which I quit doing back in the 80s when real drawing tools became available. Windows (stupidly IMHO) offers overwrite mode toggle-enabled by use of the INSERT key on the keyboard. (I'd guess Linux/Unix likely follow suit in the usual Windows-envy). I don't ever hit that button because it just puts me in overwrite mode. However, as I'm typing sometimes Overwrite mode suddenly happens. I think it must be some strange combination of ALT/Windows/CTRL/SHIFT and some other key, or two standard keys depress…

How do I reassemble a zip file that has been emailed in multiple parts?

I received 3 emails each containing part of a zip file. The extensions end in .z00, .z01 and .z02. (Emailed as such to get around the typical 10Mb attachment limit per email.) I have put all 3 files into one directory. I can use both 7-zip and WinZip to open the first file (the .z00 file) and it lists the contents of the zip but when trying to extract the files both programs are reporting errors. What is the least error prone way of reassembling this zip and getting to the files?

Is there a way to view Google Chrome browsing history past three months ago?

I'm trying to find a page I looked at months ago but it looks like it's disappeared off the face of the planet. I thought I would have better luck looking through my Google Chrome browsing history, but I can't see history past September. Can I force Google Chrome to display history further into the past? Can I retrieve the history manually from a directory? Is the history data gone?
